why is there no good* food in my house?

(*by good I mean "junky" because technically my cupboards are full of healthy, nutritious staples for preparing lovely dishes, but that is not what I want right now)

I am an advocate of whole foods, home cooking, organics, etc, etc, but what that translates into tonight is:

NO Good snackin' food in my kitchen!!! I would kill for some nice salty potato chips right about now.

Even some nice crackers would be good, but we ate those earlier today.

Or even some butter or margarine for the organic brown rice I made this afternoon in my cool new rice cooker.

Oh well, I can dream about the Café Mocha I am going to get tomorrow on the way to my practicum....

Good night.

One of those blogthings

I kind of liked this one and it is fairly accurate:

You Are Sunrise

You enjoy living a slow, fulfilling life. You enjoy living every moment, no matter how ordinary.
You are a person of reflection and meditation. You start and end every day by looking inward.
Caring and giving, you enjoy making people happy. You're often cooking for friends or buying them gifts.
All in all, you know how to love life for what it is - not for how it should be.

My list of things no Mommie should be without

I really didn't like much of the advice people gave e when Matito was small, but today I was reflecting on things that I just couldn't do without*.

So here it is: My advice for my friends who have small babies or who are hoping to soon have one:

  • baby sling (forget the stroller! It will take up too much room on the car and you will suffer on the bus. Leave it for when Bebe is about a year old and then make it one of those light fold-up ones!)
  • slow cooker, shifts time so you can do the prep when baby is asleep and then put on to cook in the am
  • rice cooker, great time saver
  • boobies (imagine getting up and making formula at 4 am!)( Iguess this doesn't really count because you can't buy them - well, i guess you can, but you know what I mean)
  • co-sleeper or a really big bed
  • a computer with internet connection: sometimes it is the only connection to other adults
  • some good DVDs that you could watch over and over (mine were 'Friends' and 'the Simpsons'), daytime tv really sucks

Things that are overrated and that I would not buy:
  • change table
  • stroller
  • baby wipes ( well, I do buy them sometimes for on the road, but little cloth washclothes are great for at home)
  • any article of clothing that says 0 to 3 mos. on it. Unless your baby is quite petite, they will be able to wear the item for aprox. 27 minutes before they outgrow it.

* okay, the real inspiration for this list was the $13 rice cooker I just bought and me thinking about how I could have missed the greatness of this product and wondering why I hadn't bought one years ago. I am never making rice on the stove again!

feeling sorry for myself

stupid special assessment on my condo is due this month. It is only about $400, but I don't have the money and it will be late and I will get fined.

It is Easter weekend. We have NO PLANS, no one to celebrate with, and I can't even take Matito to an stupid easter egg hunt as they all give the children chocolate which he can't eat. What fun would that be? Look for brightly coloured, yummy looking eggs, BUT DON't EAT THEM like all the other sugar-crazed toddlers around you are doing. This used to be the biggest weekend of the year for me, what the hell happened? sucks.

other than that: My shoulder was out of whack yesterday and I had a headache for most of the day and today it is still bugging me this morning...
Pav is leaving on Wed for LAX, I will be on my own with Matito for a couple of weeks, which would be fine except for the fact that my ultimate practicum is all the way on the other side of the city where I live, which means driving Matito to daycare (20 minutes north of me if traffic is good) and then doubling back and driving about 30 minutes south. So much for my request for a placement close to the daycare... Looks like we will be leaving the house around 7:30 am - poor Matito is going to be so out of sorts....

long time no write

Wow, has it really been so long since I wrote anything here? With school, I really was feeling overwhelmed and unable to do anything extra - I guess that is what taking 16 credits does to you! Now I am finished (yay) and I had an interview for a (seemingly) good job. I felt that the interview went well, but I guess I will really know how it went when they let me know if i got it or not. I was promised a phone call within the next 10 days, it all just hinges on the reference calls they were going to make.
After about three and a half years of not working, I really need to get back at it and make some money. Matito is happy with the daycare situation and so am I, so I don't feel guilty about him being in care. Thank God! What a stress that would be.
